Our club was formed in the mid 70’s, when a few plus 40 members of the Nationally known Dirt Diggers North MC, already famous for their annual “HANGTOWN” event decided it was time to give plus-forty racers their own Hangtown. They invited other N. Calif & Nevada racers to join in the fun.
Other plus-forty motocross clubs had already been formed in Southern Calif & in the Northwest. An International Old Timers Motocross organization was formed as an association, setting an annual schedule of ‘International Old Timer’ races and specifying rules for the events.
The Sierra Oldtimers event was initially held the weekend after “Hangtown”, on the same race track & was dubbed the “Hangtown Hangover”.
Most of the track work, starting gate, flagging & other duties were handled by some very generous volunteers from DDNMC, their family members & friends.
To qualify for the race, you needed only to be over 40 yrs of age, have boots, helmet and any size motorcycle that would work for you & be willing to go do it.The racing classes were broken into skill levels. Novice, Intermediate, Expert & Master with no other breakdown by age... Master was by invitation only.
Today, the Sierra Old Timers MC hosts one International event each year, with participants from other Old Timer clubs across the western U.S. & Canada as part of a series of 14 events staged under the sanction & rules of the International Old Timers Association.
Sierra Old Timer members travel the Western U.S. & Canada each year in pursuit of camaraderie, competition and of course, that illusive # 1 plate in their Class.
Many Sierra OT members participate regularly in Over-The-Hill gang events and other motorcycle competition events, such as AMP/GFI Racing.
